How a Story by Mail Works

Each story unfolds across a series of installments delivered to your mailbox (or inbox, if you choose the digital edition). One installment at a time, in order, on a
schedule. The way correspondence actually arrives.

•       Subscribe. Choose a physical or digital edition.

•       Receive. Installments arrive by mail real paper, real postmarks, real photographs spaced out so the story builds the way it was meant to.

•       Read. Each envelope contains the next piece of the record: letters, documents, images, and in higher tiers, physical artifacts.

•       Decide. When the final piece arrives, the full account is in your hands. What you believe is up to you.

Between deliveries, subscribers get access to our Archive Challenges optional deep reads and document examinations for readers who want to look closer. they're not required to follow the story. But the documents reward the ones who look.

What Arrives at Your Door

Every physical edition is produced to feel like the real thing, because in this
story, it is the real thing. Stationery. Handwriting you'll learn to recognize.
Photographs with dates on the back. Depending on your edition, the physical
objects the story turns on.

The digital edition delivers the same documents as high-fidelity scans, released on the same schedule. Same story. Same evidence. Your choice of format.

Not a Puzzle Box. A Story.

If you've tried mystery subscription boxes, you know the pattern: ciphers to crack, codes to solve, a game with a win condition. This is something different. There's nothing to solve to “unlock” the next installment. A story by mail is immersive fiction. Character, motive, and consequence told through the documents the characters left behind. The tension doesn't come from a lock. It comes from what the letters say, and what they carefully don't.

The First Story: The Wrong Recipient

Our debut story opens in 1957, when a stranger begins receiving a woman's account of a summer at a villa on Lake Como in 1928, an account she chose to mail to someone with no connection to her at all. These are letters that were never supposed to reach you. Eight of them.

The Wrong Recipient launches this September in digital and first-run physical editions, including a numbered Founding Edition limited to 50 copies.

Questions Worth Answering

What is a story by mail?

A story by mail is a serialized story delivered as physical mail over several weeks, one installment at a time, instead of a bound book. The Last Correspondence tells suspense stories through letters, photographs, and documents you read and piece together yourself, so the story arrives the way real correspondence does.

How is this different from a mystery subscription box?

A mystery subscription box is usually a game with puzzles to solve and a solution to reach. A story by mail is immersive fiction: there is nothing to crack or submit. You read the letters and documents as they arrive and decide for yourself what happened.

Is there anything to solve?

No. There are no ciphers, codes, or answer keys, and nothing to mail back. The experience is reading a suspense story told through the documents themselves. The tension comes from what the letters say and carefully do not say, not from a puzzle.

How long does a story take?

The debut story, The Wrong Recipient, runs eight installments over sixteen weeks, one delivery at a time. Each installment takes about ten to twenty minutes to read, and the wait between deliveries is part of the experience.

Can I read it digitally instead of by mail?

Yes. The digital edition delivers the same letters and documents as high-fidelity scans on the same schedule, so you can follow the story by email anywhere in the world. Physical editions arrive by post to your address.

Can I give a story by mail as a gift?

Yes. Every edition can be scheduled to arrive at someone else's address or inbox on a date you choose, which makes it a strong gift for readers. The digital edition can be gifted right up to the last minute.
